Aries Close-Up Competition
Yet again we had a hard-fought contest posing a difficult job for the judges to come to a decision. They did, however and awarded this year’s Aries Close-up Shield to our very own secretary Steve Clements depicted here on the left receiving the trophy from Vice-President Ian Milton who awarded the shield owing to the fact that the President Bernard Visgandis was a contender.
Other contenders were; Martin Noble and Jim Cannon.
09/03/2011 - Jay Scott Berry Lecture
Our visiting lecturer Jay Scott Berry was nothing short of breathtaking. His charm,
elegance, and graceful presentation left us completely awestruck and thoroughly entertained.
He opened with some manipulation which was like watching a ballet with silks, this
culminated in the production of two silk fountains, a metal goblet and a bottle of
wine. Very stunning.
Later despite the myth that he 'does not do cards', he went on to present an engaging card effect based on 'Destiny' and it's impact on us. A card was freely selected by a spectator from one of two decks which had been also randomly selected and shown fairly to be a shuffled deck. A sealed envelope had previously been handed to a spectator which had been in view from before the start of the effect and upon it being opened by the spectator revealed that the card inside was indeed the card of 'Destiny' but also that the card had vanished from the other 'non-chosen' deck.
A mind blowing blank paper to banknote was performed with a difference. A blank piece of paper was taken and Jay drew a picture of a £20 note with a pen. He then folded it up and upon unfolding it demonstrated that it had transformed into a genuine £20 note. But that's not all... he took the bank note and placed it front of a lit candle picking up the flame from it and performed a 'flaming zombie' with the note and flame before placing the flame back on the candle and handing the note out for examination.
There were many other noteworthy effects Jay brought to us. The whole evening was packed full of amazing and exquisite magic. Jay is a master of elegant presentation and he never ceases to entertain and impress his fellow magicians, he is definitely an original and creative mind in this art we call magic. Did I mention he is also one friendly and charming man?

21/06/2011 - Matt Johnson Lecture
Matt has travelled the world entertaining both young and old and after an extended
stay at the Hilton Hotel in Japan, decided to make Canada his new home. Since arriving
in Canada in 1998 Matthew has become an accomplished actor and has starred in (and
advised for) TV shows, Movies and Commercials. Recently he starred in a TV commercial
for "Nationwide Insurance". The TV commercial now plays across the US and features
Matthew making a car vanish on the streets of Argentina.
Matthew Johnson’s credits also feature an impressive line up of unique magic effects that are marketed worldwide. You may recognize such titles as ‘ALONE’, ‘The Moment’, ‘Any Card At Any Number’, ‘The Secret Art of Monkey Business 1 & 2’, ‘Color Blind’, ‘Drinks On Me’ and ‘Black Eyes’ to name but a few.
He also featured on the ‘True Astonishments’ DVD box set by Paul Harris. In his lecture Matthew draws on his extensive background as a versatile entertainer to bring you a lecture that has won rave reviews all over the world. Andrew Normansell Lecture
Andrew Normansell entertains in his own unique way. Sought after both nationally
and internationally, Andrew combines stunning magic, humour with an experience to
remember. A highly entertaining sleight of hand artist, Andrew delivers more than
amazement, leaving his audience laughing, and wanting more. Often paralleled with
Derren Brown, Andrew's skill as a psychological entertainer are well documented.
He is a great friend and a great favourite of Coventry Magic Circle and we always look forward to his unique charm and personality.
